Dental or orthodontic crowding occurs when there is insufficient space in the jaws to accomodate the existing teeth.
Crowding can be divided into two different types primary and secondary depending on the cause.
Primary crowding is of genetic origin and is simply that the dentition (the total size of the teeth)is too big for the size of the jaws.
Secondary crowding is crowding that occurs as a result of early loss of the deciduous ( baby) teeth. The deciduous (baby ) teeth hold the space for their permanent successors. When the deciduous teeth are lost before the succeeding permanent teeth are ready to erupt. The space for the permanent tooth to erupt into maybe “stolen” as other permanent teeth drift forwards.
Secondary crowding.
Dental crowding is an extremely common problem in orthodontics and can be corrected with fixed appliances on the outside of the teeth ( (labial) braces), or fixed appliances on the inside of the teeth (lingual orthodontics (lingual braces) ) or with clear aligners like invisalign if the case is suitable given the limitations of clear aligners.

Crowding is an extremely common problem in orthodontics. Understanding the cause of crowding will help you to understand the prevention of (secondary) crowding , and the correction of crowding (both primary and secondary), which is referred to in the blogs of Clonmel Orthodontics.
